Do you embody the spirit of Black Wall Street?

Each year, as we approach May 31st, we commemorate the Tulsa Race Massacre, a tragic event that destroyed Greenwood, the American epicenter of Black entrepreneurship, business, and wealth. By 1921, Greenwood thrived with over 100 Black-owned businesses, including a hospital, library, movie theaters, and stores, all lost in the violence. To honor the enduring legacy and spirit of Black Wall Street, Build in Tulsa established the 1921 Awards. This prestigious award celebrates and elevates eight Tulsans who embody that same resilience and innovation today, recognizing their outstanding contributions to our community.

Receiving the 1921 Award is a distinct honor recognizing Tulsa entrepreneurs who are driving positive change and building impactful ventures. As a benefit accompanying this recognition, each awardee also receives $1,921 to further support the growth and development of their businesses. This initiative champions individuals building multi-generational wealth despite systemic barriers, amplifying their impact and furthering the mission to close the racial wealth gap through entrepreneurship.

Launched in 2023 and expanded thanks to community support and sponsors like 1921 Sankofa, the 1921 Awards underscore Build in Tulsa's commitment to fostering a thriving and equitable entrepreneurial ecosystem.
